GEO vs. SEO: what's actually different

A practical comparison of what search engine optimization and generative engine optimization each reward, and where they overlap.

"Is GEO just SEO with a new name?" is one of the first questions anyone asks once they hear the term. The honest answer is no, but they share a goal and a fair amount of groundwork. This chapter lays out exactly where they agree, where they diverge, and why you need both rather than one replacing the other.

The shared goal

Both disciplines exist to answer the same underlying question: when someone is looking for what you offer, will they find you? SEO answers that by getting a page ranked in a results list. GEO answers it by getting a business named or linked inside an AI-generated answer. The audience's need hasn't changed. The mechanism for satisfying it has split in two.

Why the split is happening now

The split is happening because the channel itself is shrinking relative to AI answers, not because SEO stopped working. Gartner projects that traditional search engine volume will drop by roughly 25% by 2026 as users shift toward AI chatbots and other virtual agents, a forecast the firm frames explicitly as a prediction rather than a measured fact. Separately, studies of Google search behavior from SparkToro, reported by Search Engine Land, put the current share of Google searches that end without any click to a website at roughly 60 to 68%. Fewer of the searches that do happen result in a visit at all.

Buyer behavior backs this up qualitatively too. In G2's research on B2B software buyers, roughly one in three reported buying from a vendor they'd never previously heard of, surfaced to them by an AI tool rather than by a familiar search result. That's a discovery pattern SEO alone was never built to produce.

To make the contrast concrete: a classic SEO comparison page might repeat a target keyword phrase in every subheading and chase backlinks through "10 best X tools" listicles. A GEO-oriented version of the same page states each comparison point as a plain, specific sentence, ideally in a table, with a real source behind any number, so any single row can be lifted out and quoted on its own.

What carries over unchanged

Not everything about SEO becomes irrelevant. A technically healthy, fast, well-organized website still matters: generative engines still need to be able to crawl and parse your site in the first place. Topical relevance still matters. Being a genuine, recognized source in your field still matters, arguably more than before, since both disciplines ultimately reward being a credible answer to a real question. Think of GEO as adding a citation-focused layer on top of a still-necessary SEO foundation, not tearing that foundation out.

Note: If your site currently has no SEO fundamentals in place at all, no clean site structure, no indexable content, no basic technical health, that is the place to start. GEO techniques applied to a page a crawler can't even reach won't help.

What doesn't carry over

The tactics that carried the most weight in classic SEO, aggressive backlink building, keyword-stuffed headers, thin pages built purely to rank for a term, don't translate to generative engines at all, and some actively work against you. A retrieval system built to ground answers in verifiable, self-contained evidence has no use for a page engineered to rank rather than to inform. The shift in what's rewarded is real, not cosmetic.

A common resourcing mistake

Once a team learns about GEO, a common reaction is to quietly deprioritize SEO fundamentals altogether, treating the two as a straight either-or decision. That backfires. Technical health and indexability are the precondition for anything to be retrievable in the first place; a generative engine still has to be able to crawl and parse your site before any of its retrieval logic even applies. Dropping SEO basics to chase GEO tactics tends to undermine both at once.

Why you still need both

Practically, most businesses will keep running SEO fundamentals, site health, indexability, topical structure, while layering GEO-specific practices on top: verifiable claims, answer-first structure, schema, and a genuine trail of third-party mentions. Treating them as a single combined discipline, rather than choosing one over the other, reflects how the two actually interact today.

Tip: A simple test for any piece of content going forward: would this page work as a source citation if an AI pulled a single paragraph out of it, verbatim, with no other context? If the answer is no, it's optimized for the old channel, not the new one.
